About A Christmas Story 2025

Amanda Lea Mason joins A Christmas Story as Mom in 2025.

Eight years after the first sold-out run in 2017, A Christmas Story is back again for 2025. I am the only cast member who has done all three versions and I can already feel the spirit of the earlier productions giving me energy for this one.

My real-life partner, Amanda Lea Mason, is joining me this time as Mom. We last worked together in The Diary of Anne Frank at Mill Mountain and I am excited to share the stage with her again, especially in a comedy.

This will also be my tenth production at Mill Mountain Theatre, which says everything about how special this place is.

So come see A Christmas Story at Mill Mountain Theatre, running November 28 - December 21, 2025. Bring the family, laugh together, and get that warm Christmas feeling.

The leg lamp is lit and waiting for you.

Our first run in 2017 was both thrilling and a little terrifying.

I grew up watching A Christmas Story every Christmas Eve and Darren McGavin’s performance as The Old Man always felt perfect. At the time I was in my early thirties while he had been in his early sixties, which gave him a level of crankiness I had not earned yet.

What helped me find my way into the role was realizing that, even in a tough lower middle class life in 1930s Indiana, the Old Man still celebrated small wins. Haggling for a Christmas tree, a good turkey, getting a tire changed in under four minutes. He did not dwell on the hard parts of life. He celebrated the victories.

That 2017 production had that rare theatre magic where everything works. Roanoke showed up in a big way. A Christmas Story broke every previous Mill Mountain record and became the most profitable play in the theatre’s 60-year history.

When Ginger Poole, Mill Mountain’s former Artistic Director, asked our 2017 cast to return in 2021, the world had completely changed. COVID-19 hit regional theatres hard. Budgets were tight and canceling even one show could hurt the whole season.

Thanks to Ginger and the MMT staff, the theatre was ready to produce again under the new Actors’ Equity COVID-19 guidelines. But after losing the 2020 season, the theatre needed a guaranteed hit, so we brought A Christmas Story back.

It was my first full remount of a show I had already done, which was a little daunting at first, but it turned into a gift. We used the 2017 version as a first draft and went deeper. The 2021 run matched the success of 2017 and gave Mill Mountain a bright spot after a dark year.

After two sold-out runs I had a feeling the Old Man and even the Bumpus Hounds were not done with me yet, and it’s been an enormous pleasure and gift to return to this show again in 2025!

Why Roanoke Loves A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story is about the small things, the everyday occurrences, the tiny details that form such an enormous part of a kid’s life growing up.

Even though A Christmas Story is set in the 1940’s, the daily trials and tribulations of Ralphie Parker are all too familiar to modern audiences (or anyone who’s ever been a kid.)

Ralphie’s imperfect, weird, but loved and loving family, strange friends, bullies, triumphs and failures and his main quest to get a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas remind all of us of what it was like to be a kid: the duality of life being simple and complex, freeing and tightly controlled, when it seemed like getting the right thing for Christmas just might just change your life and make all your dreams come true.

A Christmas Story helps us remember the simpler days of kid-dome, contemplate the present, and hopefully set aside our Adult worries for a time and find the joy again in childish things.
